Why use AGM / EFB start stop batteries?

Since the engine starts, the ignition needs to power the starting motor, and the vehicle battery must be able to perform high current discharge performance; as the start and stop system restarts the engine frequently, the battery supports frequent high current discharge; when the hybrid system powers the wheels, battery needs to provide energy support; it can meet the needs of electrical equipment such as audio and lighting; when the car charger charges the battery, the battery should have strong charging acceptance performance; AGM / EFB battery can meet the start-stop function requirements.

Characteristics and precautions of AGM and EFB start and stop battery:

Start / stop system used for engine has becoming more and more popular, and they require special batteries which are more advanced and last longer than ordinary batteries, but the price must be much higher. Cars equipped with start-stop system cannot use ordinary standard batteries, even if the capacitance is very large, they cannot withstand a much greater current when charging, and the service life is limited.

According to the trials from Exide Corporation (an American auto parts manufacturing leader), ordinary batteries can charge 20,000 to 25,000 times while imitating urban driving, while the aforementioned special battery can charge 60,000 times.

For models with smart management of alternator, ordinary batteries are even less competent, because the charging is done while slowing down and braking, at this point, the battery bears more current strength. Car models equipped with start-stop system usually used two types of batteries: EFB (Enhanched flooded battery, enhanced water-filling lead-acid battery) and AGM (Absorbed glass mat, glass fiber adsorption battery).

Compared with ordinary batteries, EFB batteries have made many improvements in details, while AGM is more advanced.

Plates for AGM battery are not soaked in the electrolyte (diluted sulfuric acid), the porous AGM separators adsorb most of the electrolyte. In addition, the gas generated during the charging process is absorbed by chemical reaction, and the battery is completely sealed, so the battery can be fully installed in the cab. But the AGM battery also has its disadvantage: it cannot withstand the heat, so avoid installing it near the engine, or be well ventilated.

The EFB battery is suitable for models with start-stop system without intelligent charging management, the AGM batteries should be used when equipped with an alternator intelligent management system, because it can withstand high strength charging current, this is mainly due to special isolation equipment, small thickness grids and special mixtures of the plate that make the internal resistance smaller.

Moreover, unlike conventional batteries, the single substance that makes up an AGM battery is pressed before it enters electrolytic cell, which allows it to fight effectively against the shock. Manufacturers have transplanted many of these technologies into EFB batteries, this increases their charge and discharge times, so that it can withstand high-intensity charging, but of course, it still does not reach the level of AGM batteries.
